Vorige vergadering/Previous meeting

(10 March 2009)

Frikkie Marais was ons gasspreker, met ‘n lesing wat gehandel het oor die fisiologie van orgideë.  Hy het ons vertel van die drie verskillende tipes fotosintese wat oor miljoene jare in plante tot uiting gekom het, naamlik C3, C4 en CAM .

 Baie dankie aan Frikkie vir die belangrike inligting wat hy met ons gedeel het, en ons sien uit na die opvolgende lesings in die reeks oor voeding van orgideë.

 Planttafel bespreking/Plant table discussion

 As gevolg van die Algemene Jaarvergadering was die tyd te min vir ‘n deeglike planttafel bespreking, maar vrae is deur Hendrik Vorster en Pieter de Bruin beantwoord.

The raffle plant at this monthly meeting was an Epidendrum x Brassavola donated by Hendrik Vorster.  The new owner of this plant is Annamarie Joubert. 

Algemene Jaarvergadering/Annual general meeting (10 March 2009)

 Congratulations to the following members who were elected to the management committee:

Orgidee Studiegroep/Orchid Study group

The next meeting will be on Sunday 19 April 2009 at 13:30 and will be hosted by Martiens & Carol Erasmus.  Proceedings include a presentation about the orchids of Verloren Vallei (near Dullstroom).  Contact Christo Page for details.

Biblioteek/Library

Lede word aangemoedig om gebruik te maak van die vereniging se biblioteek.  Behalwe vir die omvattende versameling orgideeboeke, is daar ook joernale van verskeie buitelandse verenigings wat uitgeneem kan word, byvoorbeeld “Australian Orchid Review”, “Orchids Australia”, “American Orchid Society Orchids”, “The RHS Orchid Review” en “Orchid Digest”.  Hierdie joernale is ‘n bron van uiters bruikbare inligting vir die groei van orgideë.

Onthou asseblief om uitstaande biblioteekboeke terug te bring na volgende vergadering.

ONT Herfsskou/Autumn Show

SAOR Nasionale Skou & Konferensie/SAOC National Show & Conference

Host:         Natal Orchid Society

Date:         24 - 27 September 2009

Venue:      Old Mutual Sports hall, (gate 9) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Rick Turner Road (used to be Francois Road), Durban, ZA

Theme:     The Magic & Mystery of Orchids

As the ONT will put up an exhibit at this very important national and international event, we will require the assistance and plants from all our members.  All plants entered at the show will be judged and may be awarded or even win a trophy or two.  Apart from the orchid show and conference, there will also be a photography- and an art competition and exhibition.  Please contact Paola Copeman if you wish to offer your assistance.

Remember to register (R750) for the show and conference as soon as possible, as the registration fee will increase to R950 after 31st May and to    R1 200 after 31st July 2009.  For more information please contact the Organizing Committee at orchidshow2009@gmail.com
