The acting chairman for this meeting, Mr. Charles Thompson, welcomed our guest speaker, Mrs. Joyce Stewart from the U.K.  Charles introduced Mrs. Stewart to the members and mentioned some of the positions she has held in world orchid society circles, as well as some of the books she has written.

 Mrs. Stewart enthralled us with a talk about World Orchid Conferences.  She started with the first World Orchid Conference in 1885, and how it was initiated.  This was followed by some interesting information from the next couple of WOC meetings.  She also shared the ins and outs of the voting procedure for future show countries and venues, as well as the operations and procedures entrusted to the Trustees of the WOC to ensure that the next WOC materializes.

 Mrs. Stewart donated two books to the ONT library – Reports of the 1885 and 1985 Orchid Conferences at the Royal Horticultural Society, London; and The Handbook on Orchid Nomenclature and Registration, 1993.

 On behalf of the Orchid Societies present, Mr. Pieter de Bruin thanked Mrs. Stewart for her wonderful talk and her willingness to visit the ONT.

Mrs. Stewart then signed some copies of her books, including those she donated to the ONT library.

2009 Ledegeld/Membership fee

Please be advised that your membership fee of R180 is due by the end of December 2008.  It will be appreciated if members could pay their fees promptly before the due date, as the SAOC fees (for the SA Orchids journal) are also due at the end of December.

 Due to an increase in the number of orchid related enquiries, we are compiling a list of Commercial Orchid Growers in our area.  We will appreciate it if all Commercial Orchid Growers, who want to be part of this list, can provide us with their contact details and a list of what they are selling.  This information will only be used to refer enquiries to the suitable Commercial Orchid Growers.
