Paphiopedilum Symposium

With more or less 90 registrants, the 2008 Paphiopedilum Symposium was a great success.  The lectures were very informative, the venue was first class, there were lots of plants to buy, and surely every registrant thoroughly enjoyed the day.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in making such a success of this event. Very special thanks to Charles & Jenny Thompson who gave so much of their time in planning and managing this symposium. Thank you to all the lecturers, who were willing to share their knowledge and experience of Paphiopedilum growing with us.

Also, thanks to Michael Tibbs and the SAOC for arranging such a memorable Gala dinner – especially for the sponsored wine and extraordinary Cymbidium lucky draw plants, of which the grex is to be named in honour of the 40th anniversary of the SAOC.  Thank you also to the past Presidents of Council who attended the evening and shared some SAOC history and humour with us.

SAOC – Annual General Meeting 2008

The 2008 SAOC – AGM was held in conjunction with the Paphiopedilum Symposium.  At this meeting Michael Tibbs resigned as President of the SAOC, but was re-elected on the SAOC Board of Directors together with Stanley Wedge and Mike Rakow.  At the Directors’ meeting, Mike Rakow was elected as President and Alan Pike as Vice-President of the SAOC.  Congratulations to these members.

14th SAOC National Orchid Show & Conference – Durban 2009

The following is part of a letter received from Hennie Steyn, Show Chairman:

Dear Orchid Friends,

We have some exiting news from sunny KwaZulu-Natal!

The planning of the show scheduled for the 24th to 27th September 2009 is progressing extremely well!

With the outstanding examples that LOG and COS set over the last couple of years it is certainly going to be a challenge to give the Orchid lovers of South Africa a show they will remember with the same fondness as the ones mentioned! But …… this is exactly what we are going to do!

The theme of the show: 'Magic & Mystery of Orchids' leaves the exhibitors a real teaser to produce the most exciting stands they have ever built!

We are going one step further …….. specifically for the smaller societies (with less than 20 members) and individuals that want to build stands but do not have the means or manpower to build big exhibitions ………. we have allocated space for table top displays!! We trust that all the smaller societies as well as private individuals will partake in this category.”
