Dear
Members We
are at the end of yet another year and the Management of ONT would like to make
use of the opportunity to thank all the members for their support throughout the
year and wish them a merry Christmas, happy New Year and lots of orchid blooms
for 2006. Next year the SAOC National Show and Conference will be held in White River and we need lots of quality plants to build a winning exhibit, start preparing them now!
Previous
ONT meeting (8
November 2005) The
President, Herman Steyn, opened the meeting and again invited everyone to attend
the year-end function. Members were
reminded that next year’s subscription fees are due by 31st December 2005.
He also encouraged everyone to attend the greenhouse visit at the home of
Pieter de Bruin to see how he grows his orchids. SAOC
orchid judges, Christo Page and Pieter de Bruin, in association with the learner
judges Nollie Cilliers and Tinus Oberholzer, discussed the plant table.
The
winning plants were as follows: Best
African Species: Mystacidium brayboniae Owner:
Pieter de Bruin Best

Species
outing!!! Christo Page, together with Gerrit van Ede, an ONT honorary member and indigenous orchid expert, is planning to arrange a visit to Verlorenvallei Nature Reserve near Dullstroom for late January/early February 2006. Verlorenvallei is home to between 50 and 60 terrestrial orchid species of, which 20-25 will most probably be in bloom at the time of the planned visit. As Verlorenvallei is also in the middle of the crane conservancy, all bird lovers are encouraged to bring binoculars. You might just be lucky enough to spot the resident blue- and wattle cranes or some of the other rare highland vlei species like the fluff tail. There will also be lots of other interesting high altitude plants in bloom. The outing will be on a Saturday morning and members will have to drive down. All participants should bring raincoats, gumboots, sun block, warm clothing and be prepared for a whole day’s easy hiking. Water will be available, but members should bring their own food. There will be no collection of plants – take only pictures and leave only footprints. Anyone
interested must please contact Christo Page urgently in order for him to make
the necessary arrangements.

SAOC
Colour Fund donations: Our
own SAOC yearbook, ORCHIDS SOUTH AFRICA, is published annually as a non-profit
publication. In order to provide
SAOC members with a quality journal, the editor strives to include as many
colour photos as the colour photo fund allows.
However, to include colour photos in a publication is very expensive and
therefore the committee of the ONT would like to appeal to its members to make
small donations to increase our annual contribution to this fund.
