Previous
ONT Meeting (9
January 2007) The
previous meeting was well attended and as is becoming the norm the plant table
was well adorned. The talk by Andries Vorster on indigenous orchids was well
received. Who knew that there where so many hidden beauties right on our
doorsteps, and at the most unlikely of places! And the talk was just in time for
our upcoming visit to Verlorenvallei (04 February 2007). A
moments silence was held during the meeting in remberance of Marius Gouws who
passed away during December. The

members Welcome to the following new
members, we hope that you enjoy many happy hours with the society:
Name tags Please remember to wear your
name tags at the monthly meetings and to hand them back afterwards. Library New and existing members are reminded that we have an excellent library that is constantly being updated. There is a wealth of information there for the novice and the expert. Please make use of it. Members coming across any interesting articles are requested to summarise it for inclusion in the newsletter. As of next month a book or journal review will be included in the Newsletter to help those unfamiliar with the literature choose the right book for their particular knowledge and interest level. An exciting new addition to the library is a copy of the Orchidwiz Encyclopaedia. This is a comprehensive Encyclopaedia that has been downloaded onto the laptop used by the judges and trainee judges. The program can be used to trace plant lineages and has numerous photographs to aid in identification. Members wishing to view the information are to contact Christo Page. Unfortunately due to copyright regulations the information can only be viewed from the laptop not copied or downloaded to another PC. Gauteng

SAOC have ordered a number of Orchid books from
Upcoming Events Greenhouse Visit – 24 February 2007 Pieter de Bruin has invited members to a visit of his greenhouse. This will be followed by a potting demonstration and a “bring and braai”. Nominations for President All members are reminded that nominations for President need to be handed in by the 13 February 2007 so that these may be placed in the Newsletter. Nomination forms will be available at the monthly meeting. The term of office for five committee members will also end this year. Members are encouraged to consider possible candidates for nomination during the AGM to be held at the 13th March meeting.
General The
ONT would like to encourage members to sell plant related items (paraphernalia
associated with orchid growing only) at the monthly meetings. A 10% commission
will be charged on all items sold. Persons selling plants should:

Plant Search The following people are looking for plants to purchase. Should you be able to help please contact them directly:
Advertisements Members are encouraged to advertise their orchid-related items for sale in the newsletter. This service is offered at a nominal fee.
Plant rescue missions The dates for collections for 2007 will be decided at a committee meeting at the end of January 2007. If the schedule for 2006 is followed then the first collection should be at Roossenkal towards the end of Febraury. Members wishing to participate should contact Stan Dawson as soon as possible as there are only 25 permits available and the places are quickly filled.
