Previous ONT Meeting

(9 January 2007)

The previous meeting was well attended and as is becoming the norm the plant table was well adorned. The talk by Andries Vorster on indigenous orchids was well received. Who knew that there where so many hidden beauties right on our doorsteps, and at the most unlikely of places! And the talk was just in time for our upcoming visit to Verlorenvallei (04 February 2007).

A moments silence was held during the meeting in remberance of Marius Gouws who passed away during December.

Name tags

Please remember to wear your name tags at the monthly meetings and to hand them back afterwards.

Library

New and existing members are reminded that we have an excellent library that is constantly being updated.  There is a wealth of information there for the novice and the expert.  Please make use of it.

Members coming across any interesting articles are requested to summarise it for inclusion in the newsletter.

As of next month a book or journal review will be included in the Newsletter to help those unfamiliar with the literature choose the right book for their particular knowledge and interest level.

An exciting new addition to the library is a copy of the Orchidwiz Encyclopaedia. This is a comprehensive Encyclopaedia that has been downloaded onto the laptop used by the judges and trainee judges. The program can be used to trace plant lineages and has numerous photographs to aid in identification. Members wishing to view the information are to contact Christo Page. Unfortunately due to copyright regulations the information can only be viewed from the laptop not copied or downloaded to another PC.

The Gauteng Study Group will meet at Mike and Tessa Rakow’s home at 81 2nd Ave , Kempton Park on Sunday 11 February at 14h00 to discuss species identification.
