Previous ONT Meeting

(12 September 2006)

Attendance at the meeting was poor due to the school holidays and many members having been at the National Show the previous week.

The National Show at White River

Aletta Page gave feedback on a highly successful show.  The venue was excellent, spacious and airy and the other activities and fairs around the venue added to the excellent atmosphere.  All members who attended the show were very impressed.

Details of the ONT exhibit and achievements by individual members are dealt with below.

The plant table

The number of plants on display was not very large but quality was good with a large number of dendrobiums.  Species included plants not seen at the ONT before.

SAOC judges, Frikkie Marais and Christo Page, assisted by learner judge Christian Giesel, discussed the plant table:

The winning plants were:

Best Hybrid:

Vanda Manuvadee x Canda Coerulia

Owners: Plantae

Best Exotic Species

Coelogyne flaccida

Owners: Emile and Marietjie Houghton

Judge’s Choice:

Dendrobium tangerinum

Owner: Christian Giesel

Bruinslich Trophy nomination:

(Best specimen plant)

No nominations

Arrie Arnold Wisseltrofee nomination:

(Most awardable plant)

Vanda Manuvadee x Vanda Coerulia

Owners: Plantae

Congratulations to the winners!

The Chelsea Flower Show

Tinus Oberholzer gave an excellent talk and slide show on his involvement with the building of the Kirstenbosch display at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.  The show is one of the annual glamour events in the gardening world.  Tinus however convinced us that, although the results of building the exhibit are very rewarding, there is nothing glamorous in building the stand with the tight space and time constraints placed on the exhibitors.

Tinus also showed us slides of some of the other exhibits and some of the wonderful plants on show.

New members

Welcome to Roelof Pelser who has joined the Society.  Roelof participated in the bus trip to the National Show to White River.  He claims that he does not know much about orchids but showed his fellow passengers that he has an excellent baritone voice.

Name tags

Please remember to wear your name tags at the monthly meetings and to hand them back afterwards.

Library

New and existing members are reminded that we have an excellent library that is constantly being updated.  There is a wealth of information there for the novice and the expert.  Please make use of it.

Members coming across any interesting articles are requested to summarise it for inclusion in the newsletter.

Gauteng Study group

The Gauteng Study Group will meet at Christo Page’s home at 606 Gerard Marais Street, Constantia Park on Sunday 8 October at 14h00 to discuss judging in general and to conduct a post-mortem of the National Show in White River.

The SAOC National Show

The SAOC National Show was held at White River from 4 to 10 September 2006.

Tinus Oberholzer justified our faith in him.  ONT members could be proud of the stand that he built as the stand won gold for the best in its class and second best exhibit overall.  This is the first time in many years in which the ONT has achieved such success.  Special thanks to Frikkie Marais and Elsje Pretorius who assisted Tinus with the construction and the dismantling of the exhibit.

Thanks to the Show Committee and all members who assisted with the organisation of the exhibit and sent plants to the show for judging and display.  It is pleasing to note that we had new members who only entered one plant and obtained a ribbon.

Results achieved by ONT members at the show are included at the end of this newsletter.

New publication

A new publication, “Growing Orchids in South Africa”, by Henrik Venter will be available later in October.  The cost of the book is R189.00.  Members ordering through the Society will save the additional postage cost of R20.00.  Payment can be made directly into the Society’s bank account:

Plant rescue missions

Operation Wildflower has notified us of two planned wildflower rescue operations:

Roossenekal on 4 November 2006.  This is hilly country on the escarpment that will be used for a granite quarry.  Plants to be collected include aloes and bulbous plants.

Penge on 9 December 2006.  This site will be used for mining.

Members wishing to participate in these rescue missions should contact Stan Dawson for further details
