This month ONT will focus on the genus: Cymbidium

What if my Cymbidium Does Not Flower?

There are a range of issues that impact upon your plant's ability to flower. Use the following self-assessment guide in the first instance to test your general understanding of the basic cymbidium culture.

1 POTTING MIX:

bullet

new potting mix this year; (5 points)

bullet

plant repotted 2-3 years ago; (10 points)

bullet

plant repotted 4 or more years ago; (1 point)

2 LIGHT:

bullet

my plant is situated under shadecloth, 50-70%; (5 points)

bullet

my plant receives 7 hours or more direct sunlight each day (it can be under shadecloth);(5 points)

bullet

my plant receives between 4-6 hours direct sunlight (it can be under shadecloth); (1 point)

3 PLANT'S POSITION:

bullet

the leaves on my cymbidium do not touch those of other plants; (10 points)

bullet

there is a 15cm gap between each cymbidium pot; (5 points)

bullet

my pots are almost touching each other; (0 points)

4 FERTILISER:

bullet

I provide my plants with high nitrogen fertilisers between Sept-Jan inclusive, and low nitrogen fertilisers between Feb-May; (10 points)

bullet

I provide my plants with low nitrogen fertilisers between Sept-Jan inclusive, and high nitrogen fertilisers between Feb–May;  (5 points)

bullet

I fertilise my plants once per month (any fertiliser) (5 points)

bullet

I do not fertilise my plants (1 point)

bullet

I use a 9 month slow release fertiliser only (4 points)

SCORE ASSESSMENT:

40 points (Exhibiter class).

30-40 points (You can expect flowers every year).

20-30 points (Your plant may flower despite your efforts).

less than 20 points (Refer to the cultural information once more).

PLEASE NOTE: The above information is only a general guideline on growing your Cymbidiums.
