Application for membership

 

Information about the Orchid Society of Northern Transvaal:

 

The objective of the Orchid Society of Northern Transvaal (ONT) is to promote the cultivation of orchids amongst its members and the public. The members are hobbyist - and commercial orchid growers. We also support the conservation of indigenous orchids and other plants in nature. Most of the ONT members live in Northern Gauteng with Pretoria as centre, but we also have members throughout South Africa. The SOCIETY, with more than twenty other societies, is affiliated to the South African Orchid Council (SAOC) that entitles members to other benefits as detailed below. The following activities and facilities are presented by ONT to the benefit of our members and to attain the Society’s objectives. Monthly meeting every second Tuesday of every month, January to November at which knowledgeable speakers present talks or demonstrations on aspects such as optimal cultivation of orchids, orchid habitats in nature, plant and flower improvement by hybridizing, judging of orchid plants, etc;

Panel discussions on orchids and their cultivation;

Plant table discussions: Members are encouraged to bring flowering plants to the monthly meeting where experts discuss the plants and give information on their cultivation and flower quality;

Orchid shows, mostly twice a year, open to the public, where orchid plants of members are exhibited. The plants are quality judged using a formal system of show judging. As the judging system is run under the auspices of the SAOC, plants could also be considered for SAOC quality awards;

Opportunity to buy and sell orchid plants at the monthly meetings and at shows;

Monthly meeting of the orchid study group during which training of judges is done, quality judging of good quality plants takes place and in depth discussions of orchid species and hybrids take place;

Regular visits to the green houses of members and commercial nurseries;

bullet

Admission to an extensive library with books on all aspects of orchids;

bullet

Monthly Society news letter which is distributed by post or e-mail;

bullet

Orchid year book and news letters from the SAOC;

bullet

Specially organized seminars and the tri-annual SAOC’s National Show and Conference.

 

Monthly meetings are held at 19:30 every second Tuesday of every month (except December) at the church hall of the Dutch Reformed (NG) Church  Waverley East, c/o Trumper- and Dickenson Streets, Waverley.
