Next meeting

Volgende vergadering

Date:               13 May 2008

Time:              19h30

Venue:            Dutch Reformed Church hall – Waverley East

Speaker:         Tessa Rakow

Tessa will be giving a talk about the genus Dracula (vampire orchids).  These cool-growing botanicals are related to masdevalias, which we rarely see on plant tables.  Tessa is no stranger to the lecture circuit and always delivers with well-researched topics.

Previous meeting and plant table discussion (8 April 2008)

Tinus Oberholzer het ons toegespreek rakende die ‘moets en moenies’ van stalletjie bou.  Na sy praatjie het Nollie Cilliers en James Sonnenberger prakties gedemonstreer hoe om miniatuur stalletjies te bou.

They also proved that you only need one plant with the right ‘props’ to produce something with artistic flair.

As part of doing something different Christo facilitated a short interactive discussion regarding dealing with snails and ways of combating them in the greenhouse.

The plant table had quite a few great specimen plants on display as well as some unusual plants not often seen. Both James & Christo shared some very interesting facts about plants in an informative yet enjoyable way.

Die plant tafel is bespreek deur beoordelaars James Sonnenberger, Christo Page en Pieter de Bruin asook leerling beoordelaar Tinus Oberholzer.

ANGRAECOID ORCHIDS

 SPECIES FROM THE AFRICAN REGION

BY

JOYCE STEWART, JOHAN HERMANS & BOB CAMPBELL

These jewels of Africa, the angraecoid orchids, are much prized for their sparkling flowers, distinctive growth habit, and floriferous nature.  This account, the first to include species from both Africa and Madagascar, is long awaited.  It brings together, in a single volume, descriptions of all 690 species in this intriguing group and will be the essential reference for all angraecoid orchid enthusiasts for years to come.

A brief historical survey considers the contribution of botanists who have been involved in describing the angraecoids since 1781 while further sections on ecology, distribution, flowering seasons, and conservation provide valuable background information.  At the heart of the book are the plant descriptions arranged in four chapters:  the first two cover the large genus Angraecum and other genera in subtribe Angraecinae; and the last two the genus Aerangis and other genera in subtribe Aerangidinae.  The plant descriptions are enriched by years of close observation of angraecoid orchids in the wild and in cultivation, along with painstaking study of both herbarium specimens and a wide range of floras in several languages.  The precise ecological information about habitat, altitude preferences, and flowering season of individual plants will be particularly helpful to growers.  The diagnostic features of each genus are illustrated, and over half the species are accompanied by exquisite photographs of wild and cultivated plants.

ONT Safari Autumn Show

 30 MAY TO 1 JUNE 2008

I believe that this year is our society's 40th birthday, so I'm sure you will all agree that we should try to make this year's show at Safari Gardens the best ever to celebrate this event.  The Show committee has been hard at work organising all aspects of the show, and we now need your help to put it all together.

We need all your flowering plants!.  We are all experiencing plants which are flowering out of season, and the biggest headache for the organisers is that we will not get enough entries, but every year our members come up trumps and we always have beautiful plants to show.  There is a special prize this year for the best novice entry, so if you haven't entered your plants before, please do so.

An entry list for your plants is included with this newsletter.  Please ensure that this is filled in before you hand in your plants at Safari between 2.00 pm and 6.30 pm on Wednesday the 28th May.  If you are a novice, please state "Novice" on your entry form.

A couple of members have already approached me to offer their help at the show.  If you can help for even a couple of hours, please let me know. (Phone me at 012 5491740 or 082 4775070 or send me an SMS!) I believe there is also a prize this year for the "most willing helper", so join in the fun.

 Happy orchid growing

Suggestions for the eradication of slugs and snails

bulletPlace large ‘ripe’ cabbage leaves on the greenhouse floor or on the potting medium of pots.  Collect all snails and slugs during late evening or early morning.
bulletSlice a ‘Golden Delicious’ apple in half (this apple releases the most ethylene) and put on the top of potting medium.  Collect all snails and slugs during late evening or early morning.
bulletPour a little beer into a shallow container and place between plants.  Slugs and snails will be attracted to the smell and fall into the beer where they will drown.  Replace with fresh beer every day.
bullet If you can't stand to waste beer, try coffee spray.  This is a potent organic snail killer borrowed from Jerry Coleby-Williams.  Mix one part really strong espresso coffee to 10 parts water, and spray the plants and surrounding soil thoroughly.  The slugs and snails cross it, absorb the caffeine, and die.  You have to re-apply after rain or irrigation.
bulletPlace copper rings or cotton wool around flowering stems.  Slugs and snails cannot move across these items.  Thin copper plate can be bought from art shops and cut into broad strips for this purpose.

Ps.  All these remedies are used at your own risk and the ONT or its management cannot be held responsible for any losses.

 Happy hunting & killing !!!!

Sien julle almal by die Mei vergadering!!!!!

Groete
